A Beautiful Mind

Take a moment to introspect,
How queer is the human mind.
Ruthless like the raging seas at times
Or innocent like a cherubic child.
Our brain has developed the most,
So called "civilized" is our race.
We act utmost uncivilized
Just to save our face.
When we see a weak sparrow
We bring it home, and nurture.
But if we see a hooligan, a tramp
Why do we treat him like a diseased creature?
We blindly put our faith in God
Whom we haven't even seen
Why don't we trust a friend, the same
All our lives, with whom we have been?
We might spend hundreds,
To feed a hungry lost puppy.
But for an old lady at a signal,
Why do we hesitate to even shell out a rupee?
We adore a toothy squirrel
But upon a rat we don't dote
If both can be rabid rodents,
Why don't we hate them both?
Why do we fight meaninglessly,
With the ones we dearly love?
Why are we violent with pigeons,
While peace is symbolized by the dove.
Bedlams of chirruping song birds
We feed and feel benevolent.
While a harmless scurrying roach we kill
Not even hesitating for a moment.
Just because it looks repelling,
Dirty places it has been.
All it does is survive.
Is killing it not a sin?
We can survive on vegetables.
For our appetites, animals, we kill.
Homeless predators surviving on sheep
Why do we hunt down still?
Why is this killing justified?
Isn't this and murder the same?
If we both kill for food and shelter
Why do only they take the blame?
How then, are we any different from beasts?
What happened to our rationality?
We make those things fuzzy to save face
Why can't we see them with clarity?
If we are indeed the "superior race"
Why do we feel complacent in these illusions?
Why is the lie so assuring?
Why don't we mind this delusion?
We commit horrendous crimes,
And then find solace in lies.
But with every blow to our conscience,
Bit by bit, our soul dies.
These illusions are not real.
This facade we must shun.
When we start lying to ourselves,
Beware! For our downfall has begun.
